Through the flames

Whenever I feel the fire within me tingling

The smoke fighting its way through my lungs

My whole body aches to set it free, set the whole world ablaze.

Whenever I would remember those infernal memories, I flare and twitch,

the most animalistic parts of me emerging from a dried well.

I prepare my defences, but my fingers flounder …

And I only remember the lapping waves, reaching towards me.

In this quiet before the storm

Your calm whispers bring me back to sense

Seep through my flaming anger …

Through the crackling fire I see your ocean eyes

And dive deep into their swirling blue.

Suddenly, your tears stop my flames

Drip and drizzle onto my glowing cheeks

Drops of saltwater sublimate on my scales,

but I can’t seem to fly away from your presence

— why do you always bring me down to earth?
